SCSI upgrade for Emax HD

SCSI upgrade for Emax HD

2009-05-31 by bermudaben2006

hi all,
I just bought an Emax SE HD (Rack Version). I intend to replace the HD drive (which is broken anyway) with an external SCSI drive. Now I am a bit confused about the different kinds of upgrades for different Emax versions.

Is a SCSI iOmega Zip drive still the way to go? Are there better alternatives?

Do I actually have to buy one of those SCSI upgrade kits or can I get the parts I need from my local electronics shop? I understand it is only a matter of extending the SCSI cable that is already there to the back of the Emax. I am located in Switzerland so I don't really want to order anything from the US because of the shipping cost.

Do I need the Plus software disk? I read the instructions that someone posted here and they don't mention the Plus disk except in the contents of the SCSI kit. If I need it, where can I get it without buying a whole kit?

Thanks!

You don't need the SCSI upgrade kit as the Emax SE HD already has SCSI.

If you want to use external SCSI ZIP drive, you will need to extend the
50-pin SCSI ribbon cable to a 25-pin SCSI connector on the back of the rack
case. This will require carefully and correctly wiring the internal 50-pin
SCSI connector to the 25-pin external connecter (which external SCSI ZIP
drives use).

If you want to use an internal SCSI ZIP, just replace the HD with the ZIP
and make sure the ZIP is set to SCSI ID#0. You'll need to use a file or
other cutting tool to slightly widen the floppy drive slot to allow the ZIP
disks to pass in and out as they are slightly wider than the floppy drive
slot.

The Plus OS enables you to switch between multiple devices at different SCSI
IDs. If the ZIP is at ID#0, I believe it should work just fine as it will
act like a hard drive. If you need the Plus OS, I believe it is in the
"Files" section of this Emax Yahoo Group.

Hope that helps,
Dave

Thanks, Dave.
I will keep the internal floppy drive and add an external ZIP drive. So if I understand you correctly, I just need to set the SCSI ID of the external drive to 0 and it should work without the Plus disk?

the other option is to use a internal zip100 drive which you can plug the 50 idc cable straight in the back but you will need to do the slim floppy conversion as its easier to use the floppy to format the first zipdrive with the os after that you can format the zipdrive from the emax using thee os on the zip

either way it means opening up your machine and doing work on the back panel or the front panel

you need to way up the pro,s and cons to decide which root you will go

Ok, thanks. I'll have this done by an electronic engineer anyway, I'm not good at these things.

I have a ZIP drive whose ID can only be set to 5 or 6. Is this a problem? Do I need the Plus disk in this case or is there a way to set the ID to 0 anyway?

your best option is 1 or 2 i would go for 1 as the converter plug is about £6 for the internal 50pin idc to 50 pin external centronics plate and you can pick up a 50 pin centronics cable to 25db scsi1 for cheap on ebay or from your local electronics store maplins rs.com

Re: [emax] Re: SCSI upgrade for Emax HD

You won't be able to boot from the ZIP unless the ID is zero, on either Plus
or SE HD software versions.

As far as I know, internal ZIP drives are the only ones whose ID can be set
to 0.

With the external ZIP, you can still boot off the floppy and then hold down
the Transpose button to select the SCSI ID of the drive.

You might be able to have your engineer modify the external ZIP to use SCSI
ID #0, but haven't heard of anyone doing that in the past.

I saw some very cheap internal 100MB SCSI Zips on Ebay, e.g.

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180361040585&_trksid=p2759.l1259

If I bought one of these, could I just extend the internal 50pin SCSI cable to the outside of the casing and directly connect it to the Zip drive? Wouldn't this be the best solution? I wouldn't have any issues with the SCSI id either...
