I've had good luck at thrift shops. Sometimes they are still in the plastic!

I've got new shrink-wrapped DS/DD disks, 10 per box for $12, which includes shipping.

That's cool. Let me check my funds. If I did this how would I get the money to you. Do you pay-pal?

Pay-Pal works for me. They are Nashua brand, 1MB unformatted/720KB formatted. I actually have a lot of these! Sometime within the next day or so I will try to post or email you some photos.

Re: [emax] Re: DSDD Disks VS HD

2009-12-21 by Bob Conner

Because the HD magnetic media (coating) requires more power to be written to than DDDS.

If your DDDS drive does not have enough magnetic writing power the data you record will be unstable and stop working sooner than if written to DDDS disks (or not work at all... like one of our members found out).

I myself have never had a problem with HD disks used as DSDD in my Emax II or in my many Atari ST computers over long periods of time.

At this point it would be hard to say if you are better off using new HD disks or DDDS if the DDDS have been sitting on a shelf for 10+ years in unknown storage conditions (??? anybody?)

Are DDDS disks still made new?

So did you format the HD floppy to the 780kb format with Omniflop?
I am curious to try that. The drive I have in my EMAX II is a replacement drive from a PC, it should have enough power to write an HD floppy. : )

Interesting! I had good success with HD floppies; they seemed to work
for me as well as DD floppies. (Emax II.) But I figured it might have
been only luck. And, I mostly wrote them on a notebook and read them
on the Emax - not vice versa.

Bob vary well put...all drives can do both HD format and low DSDD format, but remember the Emax has a onboard FDC controller chip that is permanently set to low DSDD 720k format. This means it will always format at low DSDD power, it also means it will not read anything more than 720k of data even from a HD 1.44MB disc. You can not expect to get anymore storage other than 720k per disc.

I don't recall. If the Emax II has a format function I probably used that.

Do your original Emax disks still work in your Emax?

Maybe the drive needs cleaning?

Could also be that the alignment of the heads are different/off between the computer and Emax.

Try formatting them with the Emax.
