Giving my EmaxII a service. I have found a source for new LCDs, ELs, and sliders. I will try and grab a bunch of extras too in case anyone else needs them. Might take a few months for them to arrive from the far east. I'll post again when (or if) they arrive)

Where can I find an LCD for my emax 2, and would you know if it is necessary to replace just the backlight, or the actual LCD? I'm going to order mine from RS components UK. They directed me to their international site since I'm in Canada. Here are links to the LCD <http://gx.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=searc\ hProducts&searchTerm=PC1602AR-H&x=0&y=0> and the el foil <http://gx.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=getPr\ oduct&R=2678790> (they have other colours). This is for the Emax I though. It will still work without the el foil. --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, Duke Riddlebauer <duke.riddlebauer@...> wrote: > > Where can I find an LCD for my emax 2, and would you know if it is necessary > to replace just the backlight, or the actual LCD? > > On Mon, Oct 25, 2010 at 2:34 AM, tomcarpenter54 tom@... > > wrote: > > > > > > > Giving my EmaxII a service. > > > > I have found a source for new LCDs, ELs, and sliders. > > > > I will try and grab a bunch of extras too in case anyone else needs them. > > > > Might take a few months for them to arrive from the far east. > > > > I'll post again when (or if) they arrive) > > > > > > > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

same lcd for emax1/2 the efoil from rs is a bigger sheet you will have to cut it to the right size and then laminate it to the correct external dimentions as your old efoil also on the new lcd modules they dont use negative feed for the contrast so you have to modify the circuit slightly you need to add a trimming resistor from the pin 3 and the 5v line and the ov line the wiper goes to pin 3 and needs to be no higher than 4.7v max contrast

if you fit a new lcd then you will have todo the mod as the lcd wont work with out it but if your lcd is working fine then just get an efiol and solder it in

@duke canada in the house! jammie can you tell me in laymans terms how to perform the mod? i can put it in the files section then. is it just two wires that connect to the trim pot and which model? i notice in the data sheet for the lcd that pin 3 is 'Vo' lcd power, while pin 2 is 'Vdd' 5v power supply. you mention both those two but also an 'ov' wire? did you mean 'Vo'? do i solder the trim pot onto the lcd header? --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "jammie" <jammie.emma@...> wrote:

earth is ov you need the earth so that the pot can reference the rististance to earth you can take this from the earth point on the lcd basically you get a pot 10k linear with insulated wires wiper goes to pin 3 the earth goes to earth or ov on the lcd and the positive cable goes to the pin 2 you just solder it along side the lcd screen floating theres enough room there then turn the pot to full resistance ov and then turn it until you get the angle you require once set then add a bit of silicon to the pot to stop it from moving and thats it the efoil is soldered in place thats it is your lcd broken tho if not just replace the efiol light strip that just a desolder job of the efoil and resolder of the replacement when desoldering the lcd its easir to desolder the headder connector fron the pcb and fit a new 1 becuase the lcd pcb is through holed and plated both sides of the pcb is near imposible to remove all the solder from underneath unless you use a blow gun which heats up all pads at the same time so you san pull the pcb off while all joints ate fluid if you have not got a smd gun then you will be better to desolder the header from the pcb screen board as the pads are just on the bottom side of the pcb the reason for the lcd mod is they changed the lcd they use to use both + and - voltages where as the new 1,s dont they only use + voltages ted did the upgrade ask him also its a simple job and you do it while resoldering the new lcd screen

canada in the house! jammie can you tell me in layman terms what i do for the mod? i can put it in the files section then.
is it just two wires that connect to the trim pot and which model? i notice in the data sheet for the lcd that pin 3 is 'Vo' lcd power, while pin 2 is 'Vdd' 5v power supply. you mention both those two but also an 'ov' wire? did you mean 'Vo'?

thanks jammie! i will write a how to in the files section when i get my lcd, with proper credits given of course. on the diagram it has pin one as 'Vss' power supply GND, this is the 'ov' earth then? someone on the gearslutz forum(in the 'geekslutz' sub forum) recently made a thread about replacing the led in their sp-12 and i can see a trim pot 'floating' as you say but i think only two wires are attached. either way it seems easy enough for a first time solderer. btw i bought the emax with the lcd screen missing, and i understand now that soldering will only be done between the lcd and header and then slid into the clips on the pcb. also, you mention that the el foil should be laminated after cutting but after reading through the previous posts there is no mention of it. is it absolutely necessary? i think i can go without one for now as i plan to put my e-mu xl-7 on top of the emax(there's lots of room there!) and aim the dj lamp over the emax lcd. i'm so looking forward to using this new setup =) --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "jammie" <jammie.emma@...> wrote:

when you buy an efoil from rs its huge 160mm by 120mm its almost a square you can get several efoil size emax backlights from 1 efoil sheet you add the laminate sheet to protect the efoil and connections on the efoil

i thought there were just two connections on one side and you had to trim the sides down. how many connections are on a sheet? can i trust someone at a laminating place to do it or can it be done at home? --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "jammie" <jammie.emma@...> wrote:

1/ you can do it in a laminating machine the 1,s that cost £30 do fine 2/ the efoil comes in various formats the 1,s are best with multipul connection around the out side these have have connection for both left and right terminals you cut around the 2 connectors in a square or long strip once cut to size which is normally 2-3 mm smaller than the inner diameter the easyeist way is to cut a piece of paper as a template once you have choosen the correct polarity for you lcd you then cut the efiol strip with the 2 electrodes in the centre of the efoil then you add a laminate sheet to both sides and laminate with the electrodes about 4 mm in the laminate with about 10mm tails left for solder connection once laminated cut to 1mm-2mm around efoil once trimmed to size and it slides into the lcd then solder into place make sure the efoil is the correct way round do a test partly dab solder to the terminals then power up to make sure the light comes on if not then it is backwards depending on manufacture some come with silver foil on the back this is the none lighting side
