Hi folks I'm looking for Sound Designer for EMAX, The reason I'm looking for this one in particular is it allows you to control the EMAX from a Mac. I'm aware of other tools like Sound Designer Universal which just seems to support loading samples etc but no EMAX control. Also the various versions of Sound Designer II don't seem to work as they require additional hardware. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The original installation floppy disk (or an image of it) of Sound Designer for Emax can not be found anywhere. No one seems to have it. (BTW: check your e-mail also) --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "rjmm1900" <rjmacarthur@...> wrote:

I think indeed I once noticed a message from someone saying he had the original disk. But no further replies/communication was done. Another member who was selling the software with additional materials (cable, banks) was Wayne Griffin. But (1) he's not doing this business anymore as far as I know and (2) he was not selling a copy of a floppy disk but rather a full 100MB Mac HFS hard disk copy. This was required due to a copy protection mechanism which makes it impossible to copy this SD for Emax .bin file from that HFS image to a simple floppy disk or another hard disk. And that's the problem: a 100MB HFS image (still being 60MB compressed) is not very easy to handle and e.g to upload in the files section which is too small... Maybe I will ask the eiiiforum to host that file, I'll check if the moderator is willing to do it... ///E-Synthesist --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, Christopher K Moffatt <ckmoffatt@...> wrote:

That's a great idea. With the age of the machines, we should strive to keep all the software and samples alive for all to use. When I bought my EMax SE, it came with a box of disks and some nice sounds. I'm sure I can do more with the SE, and would like to do so. 🎃👻 Chris On 31 Oct 2011, at 18:45, "esynthesist" <esynthesist@...> wrote: > I think indeed I once noticed a message from someone saying he had the original disk. you can put it on my file sharing account and have a direct link from the emax site to it as i can host any size file i do have sounddesigner 1and on floppy disks but they require hardware i have the very first digital anlaog adc and dac called soundtools this was the card before protools version 1 card and it comes with a scsi external box that houses the adc and dac away from the interference of the comp it has a max sampling frequency of 48khz 16 bits and i used it for sampling synths into sounddesigner i now use soniccore cards for this purpose im in the middle of sampling the 8bit fm engine of the synclavier for the emax its being sampled at 16bits 24khz so that it can be used in old samplers that have a upper transpose limit ie kurzweilk2000 with a c4 sample you can go up 4 octaves in transposition as the engine allows a max playback of 96khz the t1 dss1 dsm1 only have 64khz play back so you need to same at c6 to get a full keyboard of notation from 1 sample i have also been doing a big collection of d50 and mt-32/d10/d110/d20 samples including chip tune fx and synth sounds using la synthesis from old dos games they are all in sf2 format so can be used in kontakt and emxp for conversion to emax format most are dual layer samples all are mono

softsynth and turbo synth do se type synthesis its basically a wave table you set each partial and the evelope for each partial so that it changes over time to the next partial its ok but as the emax does not do wave scanning theres no modulation of the partials over time but you can do very exiting partial loops like the 1,s in the d50 and d10 and jd800/990 if you like that type of sound i can do 512 partail slot wavetables that change over time but blend back into the same first wave as the last so you get effortless loops no glitches what i would like to see new samples beeing done with new ideas ill post some sf2 files for you to mess about with these ones are from a d50 and they are la synthesis patches emulating a dx7

Just thought I'd share my results with this software. I first mounted the SDEmax.HFS file with Toast Deluxe 4.1.3 so it would appear as a CD Rom to the Mac OS 8.1, but the program failed upon execution. This resulted in a "Sound Designer Emax 1.12 has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 1 occurred". Interestingly it will throw random type errors between 1-10. I also tried copying it from the disk image and running it from the hard disk but this gave the same error. Sometimes the application would get past the error message and show Sound Designer Emax 1.12 in the menu bar, but locked up the Mac straight after. Perhaps there is a better tool for mounting an HFS file? is this HFS file a CD Rom image?

As I have explained in my e-mail, this software can only run if you copy the full HFS image to either a Mac hard disk or to a ZIP disk. Copying the HFS image to a CDROM does not work, since Sound Designer must be installed on a writeable disk. Copying the software .BIN from the HFS image to a HD or floppy does not work neither, because of the copy protection mechanism. You can only use it if you copy the full HFS image to a hard disk with read/write capabilities and with a capacity of minimum 100MB. A ZIP 100MB disk is the most obvious solution. To copy the HFS image to a ZIP disk, you can use the small .exe file which can be found in the SDEmax package ///E-Synthesist --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "rjmm1900" <rjmacarthur@...> wrote:

Thanks for the quick reply. I do have a 100mb ZIP Drive but it is a Parallel Port model. :( I'll try and source a SCSI model, with regards to using a Hard Disk I assume making a partition would work on the same HD? --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "esynthesist" <esynthesist@...> wrote:

So I tried something a little bit different to try and run Sound Designer Emax, I used the enclosed application for writing the SDEmax.hfs to a Compact Flash card on a PCMCIA adapter on a Windows laptop. I tried it in my PowerBook 190cs and it wouldn't mount. :( I then prepared the Compact Flash card before hand on the PowerBook formatting it in HFS Normal and Extended and repeated the process and it still wouldn't mount. Just for record the PCMCIA Adapter with Compact Flash does work on the PowerBook and will format, it is 4gb in size. What I did do was use the Drive Steup program on Mac OS 8.1 to write a driver to the SDEmax compact flash volume that wouldn't mount and this made it mount. Although the application kept throwing the same error messages, I guess writing a driver to the volume damages the integrity. I've now been trying to get it to work in Basilisk II the 68K Mac Emulator by mounting the HFS file as a device and it still gives the same error message. So far it looks like I'll have to acquire a costly SCSI Zip Drive with SCSI DB25 to HDI-30 Adapter. But before I do that can you guarantee that the software that has been shared does actually work? --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "esynthesist" <esynthesist@...> wrote:

it vworks here you have to use the exe image file so that it writes the image to the file as it was made its a raw image and needs to be written as that that is why the exe file was created to read the raw file and create actual copy of the original hd drive

So I tried something a little bit different to try and run Sound Designer Emax,
I used the enclosed application for writing the SDEmax.hfs to a Compact Flash card on a PCMCIA adapter on a Windows laptop.
I tried it in my PowerBook 190cs and it wouldn't mount. :(
I then prepared the Compact Flash card before hand on the PowerBook formatting it in HFS Normal and Extended and repeated the process and it still wouldn't mount.
But before I do that can you guarantee that the software that has been shared does actually work?

dont know if it works with os8 i use os7.6.1 as i use the whole sounddesigner2 with soundtools accelerater card and external adc dac and it only works with os7 as the version 2.5 and higher stopped support for hardware samplers which worked with os8

I did some more testing using Basilisk II with mounting the SDEmax.hfs and was able to get it to work. The caveat is that it won't work when there is more than 19mb of System Ram. I don't know if this is a program limitation or because the original Mac this disk was used on was configured for a Mac with less ram. <Working with 16mb Ram> http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/9522/sdemaxos8116mb.png <Not working with 32mb Ram> http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/7564/sdemaxos8132mb.png --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "jack" <jammie.emma@...> wrote:
