OLED Group Buy- Display Installation related

OLED Group Buy- Display Installation related

2012-11-20 by Ted Summers

All-

I have installed 1 Emax rack and 3 keyboards with OLED.
I have just started sending these out and haven't got any complaints yet.

But in fairness / transparency and knowing that people expect a good
solution, I am sending this email.

I believe everyone knows that I have worked with people in good faith and
continue to do so.
So I wanted to relay what I found in my experience doing the 4
installations..

I have found that on the Emax Rack that you may have to reseat the
connector to the logic board once or twice if you have a bad connection.

The behavior I saw was an UNDERLINE on the top row of characters.
But where you have had some glitchy / odd display behavior it is most
likely due to a poor connection.
So reseat that connector a couple times if needed.
This solved the issue I saw on Emax Rack.

On the Emax keyboards I have seen some intermittent pixels on the display
not part of the letters, and a little flickering sometimes.
Again- this is a connection issue either at the logic board or at the pass
through.
Where you have had some glitchy / odd display behavior before, a new
display doesn't fix that.

With that said, it does seem to be a connection issue and not due to a
problem with the display itself.

The Emax rack DID NOT and still does not (several days later) show any
signs of this flickering / random pixel lighting behavior.
Therefore, it is my belief this is mainly due to the pass through connector
which mounts the display to the control panel board in a keyboard.

I saw this on Emax 1 and 2.

Possible remedies:
1) Clean the pass through prior to installing the new display with some
contact cleaner
- when inserting the display after cleaning, you may want to insert it 2 or
3 times to help make the connection better.

2) Replace the connector ( I am researching viable options for this
presently).

3) Solder the display on (this would permanently fix it)- spacing might be
a consideration.

Now- the new displays have gold pins and therefore aren't supposed to
oxidize (which is what causes the bad connections).
The old connectors in Emax are TIN plated.
Therefore, they can and probably have oxidized to some point.

I will try and determine both a TIN and GOLD plated option for replacement
of the connector which you can then get from source (once I have some part
numbers).

These parts shouldn't be expensive, if you want to go that route.

Again- just trying to let everyone know about the POTENTIAL for a concern.
The flickering isn't that bad, but if you are looking for perfect
operation, that is why I am sending this mail out.

When I have the part #s I will send out another email (though it might be
tonight US time before I can do that).

Regards,
Ted

i have never had these problems on the oled that i have done

on the keyboard as i hard solder them becuase i had to becuase the connections were different

also those push through connectors you have to be careful as they can break internally and you cant see it

and you get garbage or missing pixels because of it

i noticed this with panels i had to repair so that i hard soldered them

the rack is fine this is becuase they are hard soldered connections

glad all is working out ted

but for those that did not get them you still can hrd wire them in with the display that is available from rapid or crystal fonts or the other sellers of the same type of display you just have to point to point wire them

im doing 2 boards like this at the moment

If you want to change the connector as opposed to hard wiring it, this
connector would work:

3M Mfr part #
929852-01-07-10 14 pin Double row, gold plated .100

Mouser.com part # 517-852-01-07 $1.76

These are not expensive and are gold, so you don't need to look at tin
plated...

Or just solder the display, as Jammie has said.
The nice thing is the pins do exactly match up with the panel.

FYI- I might try putting these in or similar on one of mine just to see the
process / how it works out.

Regards,
Ted

ted i was mentioning hard wiring only for those who did not get the displays
that you got hold off as you cant get anymore with out buying 100+ units

so the other display has to be hard wired as the terminals do not match up

but for $1.76 get the connectors

but be warned there are 2 types f pcb one is light green and the other is
dark green

the light green panel boards on the keyboards the traces are tiny and even
with the correct tools and not much heat the traces can lift

the dark geen versions dont seem to have this problem

i would say the resin used for the coppr plate is much stronger on the dark
green versions

Put mine in and it looks great. I could barely read it before, but it's so easy now.

Picture:

Now I have to get a cf card and get this awful zip drive out of it. I got a slim floppy, but I can't figure out I can mount it in there.
