Display not working

Display not working

2012-12-03 by Chase Smith

Hi,

After frying one cf card reader, I was careful to try to measure the voltages on the new one I was just about to put it. Probe slipped and I shorted the 12v to ground and now the new white OLED display is not coming on. The emax powers up and the zip drive will run (the enter LED comes up and stays lit), but that's it. Fuses are still fine.

Did I fry the display too?

you cant fry the readers they have internal fuses that blow most are smd types but soldering on a new one will make the work again

as for the screen you might of also shorted the 5v line to ground

there is also a fuse on the oled screens for when some one mixes up the + and ground terminals

check the fuse this will also be a smd fuse

use a continuity meter to check it if there is no ring then you have blown the fuse just solder on a new one and the screen should be fine

The OLED doesn't use 12V at all.
Verify your power supply is outputting the correct voltages, the
investigate further like jammie said.
There is often some Surface mount fuse on lots of things.

Power supply is putting out the right voltage. It could have been the 5v. How can I find out which is the fuse on the display? Nothing is labeled as a fuse.

they are usually 1k1 written on them they are flat squares

if you look closely they will have fuse1 written in very small writing

pin 2 on the display will go to the fuse first so follow the track for pin 2

Re: [emax] Display not working

2012-12-03 by Chase Smith

Thanks for the help, but I can't find it. There is something right from pin 2 that is unlabeled and has no continuity, but I'm not sure if it's a fuse.

Anyway, even so, I unsoldered the display to be able to look for the fuse. I decided to just put the old display in and while soldering noticed nearly all the pads were lifted. I tried to hook it up anyway, just to see if I could get it to work and I just get one row of black boxes with a line through it and a lit enter LED.

I know I can jump all the display lines and fix that, but I don't know if there's a bigger problem, which judging from the way my day is going, I'm almost certain of it.

I checked continuity on the old display that's in there, every pin is connected, but when I power up the emax I get a blank screen with black boxes on the top. Seems like I just turned it into a paper weight.

Re: [emax] Display not working

is it the light green screen pcb i did give a warning on these the tracks bonding material is rubbish and even with the proper equipment you still can get lifted pads

best thing to do with that panel is fit the oled with the other type and hard wire it you can then do surface soldering

i have a spare screen pcb and its the dark green version

so if you need a spare

is it a black box type with 2 connections if you look really close there will be in faint red 1k1 on it

were do you live uk or usa or europe

as i can get the oled displays in white but they have to be hard wired if ted has no more left

This can happen where the IC's (sometimes specifically the EPROM) becomes
unseated.
Reseat the IC's on the logic board.
While disconnecting the display connector you may have flexed the board...

Thx,
Ted

I will check that pin 2 when I get home....

I have no white displays left.
I have 5 yellow which were not paid for and no response from the people who
reserved them.
Was about to start going down the waitlist.

Will update you in a couple of hours if this appears to be a fuse.

Thx,
Ted

Re: [emax] Display not working

2012-12-04 by Ted Summers

I don't see a fuse on these.
If you mean the beige colored surface mount next to CP1 screened on the PCB - that is a capacitor going between the positive and negative.
Mine shows 637 ohms.

If you need / want a yellow one I can ship you one of the five I have left.
Then I will hit up the wait list to sell the rest.

Regards,
Ted
