Emax HD rack unit DOA

Emax HD rack unit DOA

2012-11-30 by jdchevallier

So, after reaching out on the forums I found an SE HD rack that was sold to me for a completely reasonable price. I was elated when it showed up today, then my spirits sank when I went to power it on and nothing happened.

I tried several outlets and swapping out the cable to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Joel

there are fuses in both the power supply and the input block.
did you check all of them?

try the fuse in the psu first

is it set to the correct voltage on your unit 110 usa 220-240 europe japan cyprus australia

theres a switch on the back to change for the correct voltage for your area

unless its a switchmode psu and it will do it automatically

thats the first palce to look then make sure that the power cables are connected correctly

is the screen board cable connected if its not or loose you will get no display at all which will make it look dead

are you getting the power light on the floppy drive

Ted,

I checked the fuses just above the power cable input and they seem to be fine. Forgive my ignorance, but I'm not sure what/where the input block is.

For good measure I can swap them all out. Do you know if these are parts that I can find at a local radio shack?

Thanks Ted!!!

The rack is mounted inside an anvil case now so ill need to take it out to inspect a bit further.

The two fuses above the power cable connection seem fine. The black circle indicating voltage is set to 110 and I'm in the states so that seems right.

When attempting to power nothing happens. No noise from the disk drive or lights of any sort, no led panel response.

That is the input block (where the power cable plugs in).

Unless there is an issue with the input block itself (mine has an RF filter in it and isn't just black plastic, it is metal).
So if you have a meter, you will find those lugs have 110VAC. - one has a brown wire, one has a blue.

Assuming you got 110 there, there is a fuse on the power supply itself.
So you need to check that next.

Ted,

So I've checked the fuse inside the unit on the psu (photo attached.)
The fuse seemed fine. That said, the bit of plastic just to the left of the
fuse where the blue and brown wires connect to the board is VERY loose. In
fact there was a piece of old tape there that may have at one point been
helping fix it to the board, but it was loos and flaked off. I attempted to
power on the unit and press this piece firmly to the board to help
facilitate a connection.
Two small green sparks were visible, but the unit didn't power on.

So, it seems the fuses are fine. Not sure if this loose piece could be the
culprit?

Ted,

I sent the photo directly to your gmail since it didn't come through on my response in this thread.

Re: Emax HD rack unit DOA

The loose connections of the part directly next to the fuse in the PSU make me think that there likely was a cold solder point. I decided to open up the emax, remove the PSU and check. Sure enough I was correct.

I don't have a ton of soldering skills, but I took a "build your own arduino" class last week which gave me some basic skills. Any chance that resoldering these two loose connections will fix the problem?

I have photos but I'm not sure how to post them.

So I've just posted two photos/diagrams in the photos sections in a gallery appropriately titled "DOA...psu problem". I hope these two photos help illustrate the potential problem better than I have done.

Thank you Ted, Thank you Jammie!

Re: [emax] Re: Emax HD rack unit DOA

2012-12-01 by Chase Smith

You should try that, but when you test it, leave the power unplugged from the mainboard. I am not a tech, but my advice to you is to keep the power supply unplugged from the mainboard until you can confirm with a meter that it is outputitng the right voltages on the right lines. It's easy to replace a power supply, but not an e-chip.

Subject: [emax] Re: Emax HD rack unit DOA

The loose connections of the part directly next to the fuse in the PSU make me think that there likely was a cold solder point. I decided to open up the emax, remove the PSU and check. Sure enough I was correct.

I don't have a ton of soldering skills, but I took a "build your own arduino" class last week which gave me some basic skills. Any chance that resoldering these two loose connections will fix the problem?

I have photos but I'm not sure how to post them.

I don't even know what meter your referring to. I'm capable of resoldering the two cold joints and reconnecting the psu. Is this that risky? Sigh. I feel like I should ask the seller for a partial refund since it isn't working and I bought the machine in what was supposed to have been working condition.

I am not a tech, but my advice to you is to keep the power supply unplugged from the mainboard until you can confirm with a meter that it is outputitng the right voltages on the right lines. It's easy to replace a power supply, but not an e-chip.

solder them pins also check the earth spade tag as this can also come loose

and the switching circuit spade tag as this can also come loose

i would put a complaint into the person saying you are having to service the sampler becuase it is doa

and he sold it as working

and it must of been not working when he sent it as those joints just dont break with postage

So, after reaching out on the forums I found an SE HD rack that was sold to me for a completely reasonable price. I was elated when it showed up today, then my spirits sank when I went to power it on and nothing happened.

I tried several outlets and swapping out the cable to no avail.

  Any suggestions?

  Joel

Consider that postage could has to do with this problem.

One of my emax didn't power up as soon as I received it. Contacted the seller and he confirmed that the unit was working perfect. I carefully checked the power supply and found a cold solder joint in the transformer (quite reasonable, as the transformer weights a bit.

Any shock in transit can make that happens.

Best..

yes maybe i have had problems with the light green lcd control panels were the original solding was done to hot and lifted the tracks so that when you put uyour desoldering gun on the pin not the pad and you suck up the molten solder and there is no pad there

on the dark green versions like the motherboards and the voice board they art much better produced boards and dont suffer from this problem

i have encounted that the solder that was used on the psu is very soft which means any structural force aplied by removing the power connectors can crack the solder or move the contacts in the solder

have you soldered these items yetand did it sort out your psu problem

even so if you recieve something that does not work even if they say it was working if its not when you get it then its

not correctly sold as stated

Jammie,

Right you are. On top of the 400+ dollars I spend on the unit, I've spend over a day and a half of my own time trouble shooting, I paid to have the 2 solder points repaired (bought a rather expensive solder kit of my own but then chickened out not wanting to damage it any more), and now I have to resend via ups.

After having the solder points fixed I just decided to send it back without trying to fire it up. Someone mentioned metering the PSU voltage before reconnecting it and that is just beyond what I am capable of doing, or even what I signed up for.

The seller says he will fix it and send it back. I'm just feeling frustrated and sad and would almost prefer a refund and hope that I can find another HD rack at some other point in the future.

Win some, loose some I suppose.

Joel
