When the mkII was just out (when was that?) I wrote a piece about the 
select function in this group.  You might want to search the 
archives.  Basically it amounts to the select functions operating in 
an additive manner: all conditions have to be satisfied before the 
sample is played.  The 'select by group' (the most esoteric of them 
all imo) requires you to set one group to "start" (or whatever it's 
called -- the only non-group entry in the popup).  Other groups can 
then be triggered by groups.  So you could have group-1 play when you 
first hit as note ('select by group', 'start').  Then if group-2 is 
set to "select by group-1", the next note would trigger group-2. 
Etc.  So you could have a chain of group-1, -2, -3, ... each with 
e.g. a slightly different tom or something, which would be triggered 
in sequence when you play a bunch of notes.  But again, yuo might 
want to search the archive for the article I wrote when the mk II was 
just out.
