You can use the modulation wheel _instead_ of note-velocity to
crossfade between zones or groups.  You can't use the mod-wheel _in
addition_ to velocity to crossfade.  I.e. if you have a pizzicato and
a staccato group, each with 4 velocity layers, you cannot use the
modwheel to xfade between staccato and pizzicato while at the same
time the note-velocity determines which of the staccato and/or
pizzicato samples is triggered.  You can have e.g. 3 layers with solo
violin, double violins and violin orchestra, and use the modwheel to
xfade between those.  Using various pad-sounds for that can give very
cool wave-morph-like effects.

To do the latter: in the instrument editor set up groups or zones
with specific "select range" settings.  Have group 1's range be 0-40,
group 2 = 41-80 and group 3 = 81-127.  Save the instrument.
Now in the modulation matrix in the main interface the 1st entry is
usually "Sample Select" by "Velocity".  Change that into "Sample
Select" by "Controller 1" and you're done.  If you want to make this
change permanent, don't forget to pick "save settings with
instrument" from the EXS's options menu.
If your instrument already has "velocity layers" (which isn't a
proper name anymore -- it's actually "select by layers" nowadays) you
don't even have to edit the instrument: just change the "velocity" in
the mod-matrix to "controller 1".
