Unless you need to trim the region for it to loop properly. Many of the raw
samples from drum loop sample CDs are not looped properly, but rather rely
on loop points; which the EXS may or may not recognize, depending on what
format the original samples were in, how they were converted, etc.

Yes exactly. Once the tempo and loop are coordinated, you can just use
trigger notes every bar or two (or four, etc) to trigger the loop in EXS.
And you can then mangle them with the filters synced to tempo etc.
