Convert from Halion?

Convert from Halion?

2004-01-28 by Paul Levine

Greetings, fellow EXSers, I'm wondering if there is any way to convert
Halion programs (.fxp or .fxb files) to EXS24. My Cubase-based friend has
made some very nice sample sets of his drums, and we are hoping to do a
little cross-platform collaboration. The sound files are all in WAV format,
so there is no trouble reading those, but if we could somehow translate the
actual sampler instrument files, we would save quite a lot of time not
needing to redo the velocity and key mapping. Neither CDXtract nor the
Chicken Systems translator will convert from the Halion format. Any
suggestions?
Thanks,
Paul

I just wanted to correct my previous post:

The Chicken Systems translator *will* indeed convert from Halion, but only the PC
version, and not te Mac version =(

Hi --

I'm sure this has been answered before -- but what's the best (if there is any) way to convert samples from a Yamaha sample cd?

Many thanks,

Matthew

You're probably SOL. Since Yamaha samplers are not as widespread as
some of the other formats, you may have a hard time finding a
converter. I don't believe that CDXtract nor Translator convert Yamaha
sample format. You're best bet would be if there is a utility
somewhere that can convert Yamaha samples to .wav or .aif and then you
can rebuild the programs. Before going through a bunch of hard work,
perhaps contact the creators of CDXtract (http://www.cdxtract.com) or
Translator (http://www.chickensys.com) and see if they have something
in the works. They are both very responsive to their customers and
offer great support.

Trimming Drum Loops -- for beginners...

2004-03-19 by MATTHEW MARTIN

Hi

Am I alone in being a bit frustrated by the majority of drumloops I'm using insofar as they don't actually 'loop' without some bit of trimming? Then, once I trim to make something loopable, I'm not sure if I've trimmed it accurately enough. I keep thinking I must be doing this the hard way.....any advice would be appreciated. (It's a great forum and people have been immensely helpful -- thanks!)

Matthew

If you write notes to play drumloops with the EXS this happens because
many sample loops are not exactly at the same speed as Logic. That's
why I do not longer use the score for this but rather play the samples
as audio regions. Yes, this bypasses the EXS but I do not want to
adjust each good drum loop I've purchased from a different vendor...

Wanna try this? Just open the instrument editor, select the sample you
want and click on the small "E" to open it in the sample editor. Let
Logic create an overview, close audio and instrument editor. You'll
find this sample file in the audio window. Drag it to the arrange
window. Sounds complicated, but isn't if you have done it once.

Now the important step:
In the arrange window, select the imported object and set the locator
above to cover the length where the object should be played. Then go to
the Options/Tempo menu and select the first entry "Adjust to object
length and locator positions" (I do not know the exact name in the
english version). This sets the tempo of Logic to the length of the
object.

You can see the tempo in the tempo list and most likely it is slightly
different from what you've set for the song. If it is a good sample it
will loop now correctly. The backdraw is that you loose all EXS
functionality and you have to set the tempo each time you use a
different or the same sample at another position in your song.

Unfortunate and inelegant; but this is really the best way to work properly
with drum loops in Logic.

Once you have the tempo set though, you can load the file back in to the EXS
if you want to take advantage of the filters, LFO,s etc. It's unfortunately
a lot of work and steps to go through.

Loading back? As I understand the file is not changed - just the tempo
in logic.
But this idea leads to an other idea ;) Once you've set the correct
tempo for this sample you can use the EXS to play the sample within
this range. So you just use the sample file for tempo setting and the
EXS for playing. Not quite straight forward but should work :)

Unless you need to trim the region for it to loop properly. Many of the raw
samples from drum loop sample CDs are not looped properly, but rather rely
on loop points; which the EXS may or may not recognize, depending on what
format the original samples were in, how they were converted, etc.

Yes exactly. Once the tempo and loop are coordinated, you can just use
trigger notes every bar or two (or four, etc) to trigger the loop in EXS.
And you can then mangle them with the filters synced to tempo etc.
