Maybe I'm a little out of touch, but aren't mp3s just mp3s? I don't think this is an operating system incompatibility. Shouldn't iTunes in 9.2 play mp3s created in iTunes in X? Did you encode them as AACs instead by accident? Check your encoding settings.
