I think that Spectrasonics GC series for AKAI should be relatively simple
patches (correct me if I'm wrong, I don't own any of them) - sliced up beats
with a MIDI file to "drive" them that is.
In that case the EXS should do a rather useful job - it's only failing with
more complexed conversions, especially when converting complete CDs with all
sorts of different programs (some which had to be merged, some which better
wouldn't be merged...).
