I use A Better Finder Rename:

It's a contextual menu plug-in that you launch after selecting the files to
rename, then there's all sorts of options. Worth paying for if you rename
batches of files often. It's the best "application" I've seen for this sort
of thing on the Macintosh. There are others, but they are mostly RealBasic
crapola.
