Robert, you were correct.  It was the Macintosh truncating the names 
from the Joliet CD.  Thanks.

I was able to find a system extention on the web that allows the Mac 
to read the full length file name of Joliet formatted CD's.  All 
worked well after that.

There is a new problem now...i'll start a new thread.
