Yup, the Miroslav Vitous Mini collection may be a decent starting
point. You really need to set your budget though. Most orchestral
libraries (at least the ones worth using) are expensive. The full
Miroslav set is over $3,000 US (street). The Mini Library contains
only mono samples (which are sometimes better to use) and doesn't
contain every articulation but, if orchestral is not your main focus,
it will probably give you enough. It sells for $399 US.

Some of the samples are excellent and some are just usable IMHO. No
different than most other libraries, I would say. The Advanced
Orchestra is fine too (not fussy about the strings though) and comes
directly in exs-24 format I believe. It, too, has a mini library
version for about $399 US.

If you want to spend less, I think that the old Prosonus Orchestral
library is okay. Not the best samples but you pay for what you get.

If you get into Orchestral sounds more, you'll find that no one
library does it all well. You'll find that you end up using samples
from different libraries.

BTW, for strings, the new Garritan String Library for Gigasampler is
really amazing. It has the most realistic strings I have heard of
any library. I was blown away when I heard this library (it comes on
16 CD's or 2 DVD's!). For pop strings, there maybe other samples
which may be better suited (I like the Kirk Hunter Virtuoso Strings
for that) but for pure orchestral, I don't think anything beats it.
However, Garritan and KH are both about $1,000 US.

HTH and good luck with your search.
