I don't have that one so I can't comment by myself, but a friend of mine has it and it seems to be OK for what you need. Don't know about the price, sorry. Regards, Sascha

Don't know about the price, > sorry. Yup, the Miroslav Vitous Mini collection may be a decent starting point. You really need to set your budget though. Most orchestral libraries (at least the ones worth using) are expensive. The full Miroslav set is over $3,000 US (street). The Mini Library contains only mono samples (which are sometimes better to use) and doesn't contain every articulation but, if orchestral is not your main focus, it will probably give you enough. It sells for $399 US. Some of the samples are excellent and some are just usable IMHO. No different than most other libraries, I would say. The Advanced Orchestra is fine too (not fussy about the strings though) and comes directly in exs-24 format I believe. It, too, has a mini library version for about $399 US. If you want to spend less, I think that the old Prosonus Orchestral library is okay. Not the best samples but you pay for what you get. If you get into Orchestral sounds more, you'll find that no one library does it all well. You'll find that you end up using samples from different libraries. BTW, for strings, the new Garritan String Library for Gigasampler is really amazing. It has the most realistic strings I have heard of any library. I was blown away when I heard this library (it comes on 16 CD's or 2 DVD's!). For pop strings, there maybe other samples which may be better suited (I like the Kirk Hunter Virtuoso Strings for that) but for pure orchestral, I don't think anything beats it. However, Garritan and KH are both about $1,000 US. HTH and good luck with your search. fernstudio

Hi all, Please excuse the plug. http://www.ilio.com has several of the libraries mentioned below, including Miroslav Vitous and Virtuoso Strings. You might also want to check out Sonic Reality's Interactive String Sections for great sounding affordable strings. -Mark ILIO

There is a "light" version called "Advanced Orchestra Compact Edition" available in exs24 format which I own, but I personally believe it\ufffds a rip-off: 99,- Euro (in Germany) now, but only about 300 MB content (if I remember correctly), very basic instruments, geared towards low-memory usage, and some of the sustained samples not even looped cleanly (audible "clicks"...) - so I would recommend to stay away from that. I have heard the full series in action and found it to be quite impressive though, but it\ufffds about 1000,- Euro - and you migth run into some conversion issues (if, e.g., converting from akai to exs24...) I owe Advanced Orchestra Compact Edition (Akai > converted to ESX24) and I like it a lot. I bough it to be able to use better orchestra sounds than I can find in my samplingsynths and for this purpose it's very good IMO. It has: Strings (also tremolo, staccato and con legno - sounds you don't find in most synths in sufficient quality) Brass (universal but a very 'deep' sound) Woodwinds (universal but OK) Solo violin Solo Cello Solo French Horn Solo Trombone Orchestral Percussion (Good!) and a small outline of the orchestral stylistics (C major and A minor) >but I personally believe it\ufffds a > rip-off: 99,- Euro (in Germany) now, but only about 300 MB content (if I > remember correctly), very basic instruments, geared towards low-memory > usage, and some of the sustained samples not even looped cleanly (audible > "clicks"...) - so I would recommend to stay away from that. I certainly *don't* think it's a ripoff. It's good value for money (compared to the 'big' libraries).
