It's used to search text within documents. Let's say you've lost a file, but you know it's somewhere in your drive. You just don't know where or what it is called. Once indexed, you can find that file based on it's contents. That's why it takes so long to index... there's a whole lot of data in there. Apparently, judging from the other posts, it also helps the finder keep very specific track of where everything sits. That would explain why the EXS24 search is sped up so dramatically.
