Use your CD Burner to read the Akai files. I had the same problem, and the easiest thing was to open the EXS editor, hit Akai convert and load the mixed-media Akai CD in my (Que! Firewire) burner, which ignored the audio bits, voila. I tried the other suggestions on this list, short of getting more software, and they didn't happen for me, but this works.
