Microsoft Acquires Steinberg

Redmond, WA and Berlin, Germany -- July 1, 2002 --
Microsoft today announced it has acquired Steinberg, a leading provider of 
professional software solutions for computer based music production. 
Steinberg's most popular product, Cubase, is actively used by over 200,000 
musicians around the world. Steinberg will operate as a wholly owned 
division of Microsoft.

"Steinberg has set the industry standard for professional music creation 
and production," said Sina Tamaddon Jr., Microsoft's senior vice president 
of Applications. "We're very excited to have the Steinberg team join 
Microsoft and create more amazing products for musicians."

Windows-based products account for under 35 percent of Steinberg's current 
revenues. As a result, Steinberg's Apple-based product offerings will be 
discontinued on September 30, 2002.

Microsoft ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with MS-DOS 
and reinvented the IBM personal computer in the 1980s with the Windows 
operating system. Microsoft is committed to bringing the best personal

Tamaddon also added, to allegations of copycat purchasing, "Apple bought 
Emagic? Really? We didn't know that. Very interesting."
