The thing that I find limiting in your suggestion
(although it is a good one) is that the user
cannot play a given line at the same time. If the
switcher is selected, then you're using the midi
controller to send switch commands, not midi
note-ons, and of course, if you're sending
note-ons (exs instrument is selected), then you're
not sending commands to the switcher. The ideal
thing would be to be able to tell the environment
that the first octave of your controller sends
data to one track, while the rest of the range of
your keyboard controls another track...
