Well, if you record a real snare, at least in a pop/rock context you often punch in / EQ / compress as much that each hit is sounding the same anyways. The same often might be true for some other instruments. Personally I often found it way more important for drumsounds to have velocity rather than tonal variation. Apart from that, the described method is working with (the individual parts of) layers as well. Regards, Sascha
