Hi David,

Could you elaborate exactly on what you mean by "drum maps"? Do you mean mapped instruments, where you might have different drums (snare, kik, tom, etc) routed out through different cables that go to different instruments?

Yes, I believe "Mapped Instrument" is the proper term. So I route,
for example, D2 on the keyboard to program 200 on Midi channel 1 on
the Kurzweil, which contains a bunch of snare samples across the
keyboard. Then I transpose the D2 note to whatever key on the
Kurzweil holds the snare that I want. That kind of thing. Plus I
have transformers for sending velocity values over, say, 100 to a
tamborines as well. So ghost note snares don't trigger a tambo, but
medium-to-hard ones do, for a snare/tamborine combo hit. Powerful as
hell. I highly recommend it.

And the EXS lets you do just that as well since 5.2.

- Load a drumset (well, a single zone for that matter would be sufficient).
- Load a sample into that zone if there isn't any allready.
- Record and play some sequence through it (or play it manually).
- Click into the zone's sample box to bring up the "open" dialog.
- In that dialog box, check "Auto-Exchange".
- Scroll through your samples happily, when done press enter.

That's it.

Cheers,
Sascha

hi list,
i am still running on OS 9.X with logic audio 4.8 - can i just upgrade the
exs or do i need OS X and a higher logic audio to keep things running ? my
system is running "stabil" like hell so i dont want to change or upgrade
right now but it seems like i have to ? and if i have to upgrade do i need
new drivers for my 2 motus converters ?

i want the EXS newest version ;)

however thanks to all the listers for the excellent information flow ;)

nice to be with all of you !

Err, that's pretty cool, but for those who want realistic drum
sounds, who wants to work in single layers? But a very cool feature
otherwise.

Well, if you record a real snare, at least in a pop/rock context you often
punch in / EQ / compress as much that each hit is sounding the same anyways.
The same often might be true for some other instruments. Personally I often
found it way more important for drumsounds to have velocity rather than
tonal variation.
Apart from that, the described method is working with (the individual parts
of) layers as well.

Sascha

Sascha (or anybody),
In the exchange that ended with your post below, you are talking about
audio files right.
Is there anyway to audition rex files without having to import them,
extract them and then play them on a track, I know in Reason from Dr.
Rex you can just scroll through you rex loops and audition them quickly
to find one you like. I'm new to using rex so I am trying to figure out
the best way to use them. Is there another way to go thru and play rex
loops from Logic or the EXS.
Also does anyone have any thoughts about the pros and cons of
Spectrasonics Stylus, as opposed to using rex files, and/or are there
other drum options for the non-drum programmers like myself. When I
make a drum track from scratch, 1 tom tom or snare at a time, it sounds
like the kid next door with his first drum kit! (If I throw in one of
those rex loops, suddenly I'm a hip hop genius.)

Thanks
Sully

Sully,

You can audition REX files directly from the Import Audio window, _before_
they become part of your Arrange page. Just select Audio Import from the
Audio menu. Just don't forget to select an Audio track first. It won't work
if you're on an Instrument track. I don't know if you can pre-audition when
you import a REX file into EXS however, since I've yet to try this. The
great thing is that when you audition using Audio Import, the tempo of the
REX file also matches the tempo of your Song.

As for the pros and cons of Stylus. The only con I can think of is that it
is a closed system of loops and hits, meaning you can't add to the bank of
sounds. That said, there's already a lot there, and you can change them
radically. The best bet is to have both Stylus and EXS! As for other
options, you might want to check out pHATmatik Pro and/or pHATfactory
(http://www.bitshiftaudio.com/). It is a VSTi that also allows you to
radically modify a given drum loop, and that, like REX files, can match any
tempo/feel.

Regarding how you sound when you try to program from scratch, don't be too
hard on yourself. I don't know if you play the violin, but if you don't,
are you surprised that you sound positively awful when you try to play one?
Just like playing a violin or a flute, it takes time, practice, patience,
and more time before you can program beats like a pro. If you have the
time, take it and start by copying what you hear others doing. Drop a loop
you like into Logic, call up a drum kit in EXS or something, and play along
with the snare or the kick or the hats, until you understand what's going
in terms of feel. And remember as well that half of the magic of a great
loop is the sound of the individual parts. That means understanding EQ,
compression and reverb.

WOW!
Thanks Ned for the great reply. I guess you can tell where our heads
are at; My XMAS Morning- Wake up, Open presents with the kids - Make
Coffee - Sneak back to my studio to check the LUG for responses to my
post. It probably would've been in reverse order if I could have held
off the kids for 10 minutes.

I just tried the Import Audio to audition rex files. That is very very
cool!!!! Thanks again. It's hard to piece some of this info together
with the documentation provided for the EXS,( I am however working my
way through the first manual I have ever had to read- THE LOGIC manual)
This is a really great place, I'm definitely gonna hang out here more!

Happy Holidays!

Gotta get back to Christmas (Darn)!

I wish. There's no way to audition in pHATmatik at _ANY_ tempo; on Mac anyway.....

You're right Eli. However, it is possible to audition with pHATfactory. I
just got it and it's great!

What's pHATfactory like? I got the feeling, from reading the promo they sent out, that it was basically just the pHATmatik Pro bundled with a loop library.

Yes, that's right. The library is pretty cool, though, and there's a fair
number of loops. It's really very particular, however. The loops are quite
processed, very electronica-sounding, with a hard edge to them. Lots of
synth lines, and a number of fresh-sounding beats. The best part is how
easy it is to transpose the loop in real-time.

I think Bitshift's plan is to keep putting out different librairies/styles,
that can just plug right into pHATmatik. It's a good bang for the buck if
you want a f*cked-up modern electronic sound!

The advantage with the factory, is that the loops are perfectly chopped and
the tempo is all set. It's just that much faster to use these ready-to-go
pHAT loops. The only limitation in the first pHATfactory again is the very
specific style of the material - but of course, you can always load up one
of your own loops.

I'll be making a demo or two in the coming weeks, so I'll have more to
report then, if you're interested.
