You can audition REX files directly from the Import Audio window, _before_ 
they become part of your Arrange page. Just select Audio Import from the 
Audio menu. Just don't forget to select an Audio track first. It won't work 
if you're on an Instrument track. I don't know if you can pre-audition when 
you import a REX file into EXS however, since I've yet to try this. The 
great thing is that when you audition using Audio Import, the tempo of the 
REX file also matches the tempo of your Song.

As for the pros and cons of Stylus. The only con I can think of is that it 
is a closed system of loops and hits, meaning you can't add to the bank of 
sounds. That said, there's already a lot there, and you can change them 
radically. The best bet is to have both Stylus and EXS! As for other 
options, you might want to check out pHATmatik Pro and/or pHATfactory 
(http://www.bitshiftaudio.com/). It is a VSTi that also allows you to 
radically modify a given drum loop, and that, like REX files, can match any 
tempo/feel.

Regarding how you sound when you try to program from scratch, don't be too 
hard on yourself. I don't know if you play the violin, but if you don't, 
are you surprised that you sound positively awful when you try to play one? 
Just like playing a violin or a flute, it takes time, practice, patience, 
and more time before you can program beats like a pro. If you have the 
time, take it and start by copying what you hear others doing. Drop a loop 
you like into Logic, call up a drum kit in EXS or something, and play along 
with the snare or the kick or the hats, until you understand what's going 
in terms of feel. And remember as well that half of the magic of a great 
loop is the sound of the individual parts. That means understanding EQ, 
compression and reverb.
