But then, the *free* part is where the problems come in. I suspect a lot of them to be not exactly free ones (especially a lot of the free soundfonts you can get like anywhere). Just putting together the EXS patch and pointing people to the used samples often doesn't work either as I a) often destructively manipulate the samples to fit better and b) don't even remember where a lot of them were from (5 years of loading samples from the web generates quite a huge amount of stuff all over the place...). So, in the end the only method of doing such a thing is generating your own samples. Personally, I don't have such an option too often - apart from sampling VSTis, generating other blurbs and noises with whatever soundgenerators and eventually sampling some guitars. I had planned to sample some drums and even some horns by myself, but as the studio of my former university is currently unavailable (I could've recorded there for free) I don't know how long it'll take.
