Unfortunately you're right with that. Rar originally is a far superior format than WinZip, especially the multimedia compression is very nice (approx. compression ratio is around 50%). The reason it was started being used by "warez kiddies" back then was that it supports split files that would fit on a floppy disc, so you could download at the (rare) places where they had internet access and take things home with you. Or just copy it from some of your warez friends. Later on they seem to have adopted the format for newsgroup distribution of cracked programs, apparently because they don't do any good with larger files (and still for the reason that floppies were the main porting medium).
