PC Winrar 3.0 files to MacOs 9 or earlier...

PC Winrar 3.0 files to MacOs 9 or earlier...

2002-12-04 by Thomas Hansen Skarbye

Hi,

I need to decide tonight whether I should put my new 24 bit EXS24
sample library "Scarbee R.S.P.'73" (Rhodes) uncompressed (2.25 GB) on
4 CD's or use winrar to make 2 split volumes using only " CD's. Seeen
from a manufacturer view there is quite a difference: more CD's, more
expensive shipping, etc.

But what about compatibility? I use Windows XP and have Winrar 3.0.
If I make two .rar files (Split volume on 2 CD's) will you be able to
extract the files if you have MacOS 9 or earlier?

On the www.rarlab.com it seems that winrar 3.0 only comes to MacOs X.

Is there a free stuffit version for MacOs 9 that can extract rhe
files?

I will really appreciate fat help, since I have to do the manufaction
now.

thanks

.rar is always a pain in OS 9.
I end up throwing them into Virtual PC to decompress.
Most people probably don't have Virtual PC.

Not sure about the latest stuffit, but at least until recently (or
maybe still) stuffit only did rar-2 format, if I remember correctly.
So you could compress it with an older version maybe?

I'd personally recommend .zip files. It may be a predominantly PC based
format, but is supported by OS9 and OSX versions of stuffit IIRC.

Failing that, is there any reason you cant quickly knock up a custom
installer application that uncompresses from whatever format itself and
doesn¹t rely on stuffit or whatever? Pretty easy...

P.S. I'd personally keep away from RAR as a format in general as its
normallly just associated with warez kiddies and isnt that widely supported
outside of that community.

Best Wishes,

[exs] Virtual Sampling on OS X

2002-12-05 by Darcy Phillips

I have had very good luck with the disk streaming feature on OS 9, it's
worked almost flawlessly on my TIBook 667. But it is not working at all on
OS X. Many attacks are non-existant, and the audio is full of crackles and
pops.

Anyone having luck with disk streaming on OS X? Darcy

[exs] Saving instrument edits

2002-12-05 by Darcy Phillips

It's probably right in front of me, but I can't see it: When I make a change
to an instrument, like change an envelope, how do I save that as a permanent
change in the instrument? The only thing I can see is saving plug in
settings, but that can't be it... I want to save the settings in the
instrument file, the .exs file. If I change to another instrument, the edits
just disappear. Hmm. There's gotta be something I'm missing...?

So far, the exs seems like a pretty good thing...

I have decided to let the EXS24 and Halion version ship on 4 CD's uncompressed. Theis way there will be no problems for the Mac people.

Thanks

Unfortunately you're right with that.
Rar originally is a far superior format than WinZip, especially the
multimedia compression is very nice (approx. compression ratio is around
50%).
The reason it was started being used by "warez kiddies" back then was that
it supports split files that would fit on a floppy disc, so you could
download at the (rare) places where they had internet access and take things
home with you. Or just copy it from some of your warez friends. Later on
they seem to have adopted the format for newsgroup distribution of cracked
programs, apparently because they don't do any good with larger files (and
still for the reason that floppies were the main porting medium).

Click the "Options" pulldown. "Save settings to instrument".

I'd never even heard of .rar until I went to download some great .gig
sounds (from www.worrasplace.com, for example) - point being that
nobody's talking about using it, just decompressing those files!

Quite right. I never would have thought to look under "options" for such a
function, a bit of a strange place to put it, imho.

Certainly not very hard to find, though, if one spends more than a minute at
it...

Thank you Sascha!
