Personally, if you've got 300 or 400+ MB of RAM, your system might run better, but Microsoft warns against this and to be honest the MS memory manager is pretty agile. Still, the basic principle of what I discussed holds true on any platform. I don't know if it's worth worrying about in the case of your PC. Try it and see what happens. Just remember your previous settings and don't open 10 applications at once. If you exhaust your RAM capacity, programs will slow down or cease to function, and Windows may become unstable. Have fun!
