Sure.
I don't think it makes that much sense using anything new here, so the
OS-based "open" or "load" dialogs that people are used to anyways only would
make sense.
But my main point was the "preview in context" thing. VSampler (PC only) has
exactly that. You get a plain, explorer-style "open" menu with an additional
preview option. This is just great and comfortable. Of course you can resize
that box as much as you want, so in case you got large directory you just
drag it across all your monitor estate.
