Well, I have no idea about the voicing structures Virtual Guitarist is using (they may very well limit you), but in general chords can easily be expanded by thinking in upper harmonic structures. Example: C / A = Amin7. Cmaj7 / D = D7/9/13/sus4. Gmin/b5 / A = A7/b9/b13. And so on... So maybe it's just your brains harmonical vocabulary that needs to go beyond?!? No pun intended, btw!
