It's a lot easier to control filter cutoff using the hyper-edit display. An 8th-note frequency is good for filter cutoff. You find out the control number info by messing with cutoff through the EXS display while recording. Then check the event list and you've got the correct info. Delete the junk track. Create a new one and view it through hyper-edit. Choose a parameter track and reassign the MIDI control number info to the proper settings you got from the junk track. Now you can draw really accurate cutoff patterns that sound very professional. It beats using a virtual controller. The only thing better is a hardware fader or knob, and still there's a time and place for the technique I'm suggesting. It works very nicely for build-ups. I know these instructions are a bit vague, but hopefully you'll catch my drift...
