I used to swear by the EMU e6400 which has killer filters, but the 
convenience and flexibility of the EXS has won me around. I now only use EMU 
for those moments when you need that intestinal punishing bass sound or some 
other special filter effect.

now the EXS mk II has more filters I go back even less, there is definitely 
a difference in quality between the two [EMU creamy sound, EXS a little more 
clinical] but even so I find that 'Translator' has converted across most of 
the bread and butter sounds that I used to use pretty well and they still 
sit in the mix just as well.
