Hi all, I'm planning on selling my Roland S760 to using the EXS24. But I'm worried in case I make a mistake. Its just I love the filters in the S760 and it also has a very nice warm bottom end on the sounds. How does the EXS24 compare filter wise and sound wise? Has anyone else moved from hardware to software sampler? What were your experiences? Will I regret selling the Roland? Cheers, John

I moved from yamaha a4000 to EXS24 few months ago and I really don¹t look back! Yamaha suffered slow SCSI transfer speed, it was pain to transfer samples from my mac to it. I liked yamahas filters, but I think EXS's are even better. I had 4 gb drive inside my A4000 and I was not able to move my entire sample library in it. Now I have 120 gb hd and virtually unlimited space. I think in studio theres no use for hardware sampler anymore. timo

I rather liked the Roland sample libraries, and still miss those nice playable instruments (don't know if there's a handy way to port 'em across, or how well it'd work). I toyed for a while with the idea of getting an old Roland sampler just to get access to the library, but in the end decided to stay software-only (Mind you ... if Roland brought out a softsampler or soft sample- player bundled with those libraries, I'd be sorely tempted to get it). EXS24 mkII is great as a general-purpose, low-CPU-usage, fast-to-use sampler, but it might not have all the bells and whistles that you might be used to. The convenience counts for a lot, though. Depends on the sorts of instruments that you use, if you want to adjust the envelopes and controllers of individual drums in a kit, EXS might not be comprehensive enough. Dunno. Erk

I used to swear by the EMU e6400 which has killer filters, but the convenience and flexibility of the EXS has won me around. I now only use EMU for those moments when you need that intestinal punishing bass sound or some other special filter effect. now the EXS mk II has more filters I go back even less, there is definitely a difference in quality between the two [EMU creamy sound, EXS a little more clinical] but even so I find that 'Translator' has converted across most of the bread and butter sounds that I used to use pretty well and they still sit in the mix just as well. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself with cool emoticons http://messenger.msn.co.uk

I'm an EXS24 newbie and I just bought Xtreme Analog. I've built a few multi-sampled instruments, but the filters are still kind of a mystery to me. When I looked at some of the Xtreme Analog patches in the editor, it's plain to see that the filters are a huge part of the sound. So, my question... Is there a decent tutorial around that discusses the use of filters in a serious sampler? (I guess it doesn't neccisarily have to be the EXS24) I've got the EXS24 manual, but it's very thin. (for that matter... where can you go to read about keyswitching?...) Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated. I don't think the S-series have an analog filter either :-). I've heard a lot of filters and I still think the EXS is one of the best virual analogs (next to Mercury1, VirSyn, Virus, Waldorf and Fromage). Never got plastic visions while using it! What I like most are the artefacts that come up when cranking up the drive and resonance. It has a lot of personlality. > I wouldn't solo it though. That's certainly what I do! The filter in the EXS does not sound like an analog filter. It sounds like a virtual analog filter. In other words, artificial, plasticky. I do use it all the time though because of it's convenience. I wouldn't solo it though.
