Some akai setups use different programs in a single patch -- like
violins with oboe. In such cases "merge programs" would merge the
violins and oboes into a single EXS instrument. Without "merge" you
would get one violins instrument and one oboe instrument. AFAIK
there's no easy way to 'see' (e.g. from the akai import window) if
'merge' should be on or not -- it depends on what an akai sampler
would do with those programs. If one folder contains e.g. 4
different violin programs, you can be pretty sure that those should
_not_ be merged. if a folder called 'tutti' contains 5 instruments
though, you probably should switch 'merge' on. It's mainly a matter
of experimentation -- or loading the disk into an akai sampler and
see what it does.
