Tips for installing Vienna Symphonic Library/EXS24

2003-04-26 by Colin Shapiro

I thought I should post these tips as they may help folks who will be
installing the Vienna Symphonic Library for EXS24.
These were also posted to the VSL forum. They apply to Logic v6 with
Project Manager.

Part one:
I started to get really frustrated waiting minutes for each VSL
instrument to load into EXS24. Then I realised that the time was
taken finding the samples for each preset. I fired up the Project
Manager in Logic and requested a scan, and it really was worth the
wait.

Now, each time I want to preview an instrument, it only takes a
couple of seconds and it's ready to play. So, hit scan, go have a
bath, lunch and a few cups of tea.....you won't be sorry.

Part two- more info:

All of the file references for EXS/VSL instruments in Project Manager
are unresolved if you install VSL by simply copying all of the DVD
files in the Mac Finder. The sample files all read
<Ice_Cube_VSL1:DLS-Giga Samples etc etc> - this was obviously the
original file path saved with all the instruments.

I realise now I should have tried the <Functions><Install files
from...> command. The Logic 6 manual says that this is way to do
things from now on. Pity I found that a day too late! If any new user
tries this, please post the results here.

To remedy the unresolved files, you have to select all the EXS
instruments with red triangles and then choose <Functions><Find
unresolved file references for selected items>

And don't walk away from your screen.....you'll get lots of alerts
asking you to choose between 2 possible matches. Generally, I'm
finding it's the first choice, but I'm having to watch file names
carefully.

On the positive side, a large instrument like <Strings_all_EN> which
took several minutes to load this morning now loads in a few seconds.

Hope this helps someone out there. . . . .

Regards - Colin
