Select the file and press Command-I to get the Info window -- that 
should reveal the version number.  You can also open the Extensions 
window and then pick 'View Options' from the Finder's View menu. 
Check the 'version' checkbox and the window will show all versions 
for all files.

Re: the 1.4 extension -- that was a problem when accessing mixedd 
mode CD-ROMs.  Aren't you confusing 2 different problems (see FAQ 
18.15)?
