Well, Firewire has enough bandwidth to do a lot, but the
implementation in my G4-upgraded Pismo machine - and, I've been told,
all but the last couple of TiBook generations - isn't great. I
couldn't run a Digi 002 on that PowerBook (because it's controlling
the mixer and running audio down the same wire), but even on the
internal drive it can record eight simultaneous tracks while playing
back 24.

So the Firewire bus on that machine is fine for a lot of things. I
used to use it as an auxiliary sample-playing machine all the time,
but only for RAM-based samples. With a dual gig Mac and a Giga PC I
don't need to do that, but the opinion of your Apple tech below needs
to be qualified. You can do a lot with a Wallstreet.

The Wallstreet doesn't have Firewire, but a lot of things have
changed since then.

Why would you need to? You're in a studio setting if you're recording
54 ins, so you can use whatever works.
