Probably to surround sound import and playback. MOTU's upcoming Mach 5 will 
do that.

Yes, you're right. But a few are coming really close (hint, hint: they're 
both in the the subject header). Patience, my friend. How long did it take 
Logic to become the sequencer it is today? Do you remember when loading 
more than 612k of samples was a big deal? I do - we live in wonderful times 
(for audio)...
