Thanks Steve,

I've already tried this (figured it out after alot of head scratching!)
I've also spoken with Michiel Post. He sent me back here to ask
more questions. If you have this working now can I please phone
you for advice?

If it doesn't yet work well, do you have any other ideas?

all the best,
Franklin

Re: [EXS] optimum set-up with TiBook 500

2003-09-01 by Julie Larson

Hi Franklin,
I'm on a TiBook...1 gig ram..and 1ghz processor. My experience with
the piano is that it is great and I mean great for playback. No
issues...no problems. But I've started using the smaller versions of
the piano for input. Those pianos sound great too...and I just switch
when I have the line the way I want it. Hope this helps...I know it's
not optimal but it works.

Re: [EXS] optimum set-up with TiBook 500

2003-09-01 by kiermyer

Thanks Julie but I'm using a TiBook 500mhz with 1gig ram and
it's really stuttering and eventually (a few bars later) stopping. I've
even tried just freezing the tracks but nothing is working. I agree
that it sounds fantastic. I don't mind inputting with another
instrument.

The smaller versions you mention, do you mean the 8 layer
ones? That is what I am actually using and still the same
problems!

Any other ideas???

Thanks and all the best,
franklin

Re: [EXS] optimum set-up with TiBook 500

2003-09-01 by Julie Larson

Hi Franklin,
Try playing just a few bars over and over...keep playing through the
stalls...see if playback improves with each play. My experience is
that is does. Not just on this piano...but other instruments as well.

Don't know if this is your issue...but that little test will tell you.
If your playback improves...this is a memory handling issue. OSX
handles memory much differently than 9. I get a lot more sputtering
with OSX... 9 just seemed to function until I maxed it out....But X
keeps allotting more memory. It's as though it has to decide to load
each sample in real time...but if you just keep plugging...eventually
the sputtering stops... and playback is fine. But the process begins
again if you quit logic. I've been meaning to ask the group if anyone
else is experiencing this...or if there's some command somewhere that
will circumvent this laborious task.

other things to consider:

What audio card are you using?
How much ram are you allotting to Logic?
Are you using bunches of plug-ins?
Are your samples on an external drive?

I was a beta tester for PMI so I'm not sure what actually came on your
CD...but I have a piano with 4 layers. If you don't have that it would
be easy enough to create.

Somehow I doubt the problem is your processor...and a gig of ram is
enough...

julie

Hi Julie,

Thanks for your help, your being very generous.

I'll try to play a phrase over and over...perhaps I''ll get lucky.
Michiel sent me 8 and 16 layer instruments. How do I make a 4
layer one please?

> What audio card are you using?
Metric Halo MIO 8228 / ULN2

> How much ram are you allotting to Logic?
You mention allocating more memory for Logic but how can I do
this in OSX???

> Are you using bunches of plug-ins?
no, not right now on this piece with the PMI

> Are your samples on an external drive?
yes, 7200 oxford 911 - IBM deskstar

so...
I'll keep on trying and then fall back to the giga 1gig

Re: [EXS] optimum set-up with TiBook 500

2003-09-02 by michielpost2003

Hi there,
I just bump in this topic and can't really help much as I don't have
Logic on a Titanium. It seems something is wrong in your setup as
suggested by Julie who is running the same library. Disk streaming
is really needed to be able to play the 8 and 16 layer patches with
a 1 GB RAM system. It seems most likely to me that the disk
streaming process is, for some reason, eating up all the resources
your Titanium has.
I have one tip though. I found this FAQ from Jan Hendrik Veenstra
who is very active on this group. He wrote a splendid manual where
many issues regarding the EXS24 and audio setups are discussed.

http://www.omega-art.com/logic/faq/index.htm

Hope this helps.
If everything else fails we'll send a PMI Bosendorfer 290 EXS24
library over to Emagic and ask their staff to examine what is wrong
here.

Hi Franklin,

> How do I make a 4 layer one please?

Simply open your 8 layer instrument...save as and delete 4 layers.
You're going to want to listen to the layers to determine which ones
will be more useful to you....you might delete every other velocity
layer. Its up to you. I'll tell you what...if you have
trouble...send me your email address...I'll email a 4 layer .exs
instrument

> You mention allocating more memory for Logic but how can I do

You're right...I slipped a cog

> so...
> I'll keep on trying and then fall back to the giga 1gig

well...it's good you can do that...but your TiBook should do it

		Hi Franklin,

I have the exact hardware as you..except for the Metric Halo stuff.
Seems Emagic
doesn't recommend using Firewire Audio boxes with Firewire Hard Disks
for streaming audio.
Try: a) moving the PMI to an internal audio partition, if you
have one.The Ti500 has a clunky
Firewire implementation compared to subsequent PBks.
			  b) Changing to CoreAudio (In Logic) and using the internal audio
instead of the Metric Halos.
			  c) enabling larger disk buffers and large (or jumbo) process
buffers in Logic.

			  d) Use Diskwarrior to fix and optimize directories

			  e)	repair OSX disk permissions using the boot disk

			  f) from the ESX24II plugin window, limit polyphony to 32 or 24
voices

I have had a few problems with the pianos with release-trigger
samples, try the 8 layer no release for starters.
                                  HTH,
				Good Luck,

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the info. I have the firewire drives running off of an IBM
firewire carbus card. Moving the PMI to the internal drive sounds
like a bad idea because I believe it's pretty common knowledge
that a 7200 oxford 911 firewire drive has much better
performance than the internal powerbook drives that shipp with
these machines
.
Well I'll keep trying and see what I come up with. Thabks for your
help.

Re: [EXS] optimum set-up with TiBook 500

2003-09-03 by kiermyer

Thank you for your help Michiel. I actually split this piano part into
8 seperate files and bounced each to disc just to add them
together at the end so I could get the amazing Bösendorfer290
sound for this track.

The singer that came in to overdub on it today, Keith Payne, was
totally knocked out! He said that the piano sounded huge and so
well recorded. Then I pointed to my studio 49 (!!!) keyboard and
he almost fainted.

Thanks for your great work on this library man.

Franklin

Re: [EXS] optimum set-up with TiBook 500

Hi,
I had problems with this instrument until I realised that I had to enable
streaming from disk - go to options menu on EXS panel - find 'Virtual
Memory', click on it and check the box in the pop up screen. The instrument
is 2.4 gig and the exs tries to laod it into RAM if you don't enable virtual
memory - hope this helps

Hello, I've just joined and happy to be here!

I have just gotten the PMI B\ufffdsendorfer from Michiel Post and it
seems just fabulous. Only thing is, I can;t use it!

I suppose that it is just too heavy for my system. So...please
gove me advice. I want to learn how to use samples kike this. I
have a TiBook 500 running OSX 10.2.6 with 768 mb ram. I'm
using Logic Platinum 6.2 with the ESX24II. I am storing the
samples on external 7200 oxford 911 drives (not sure of the
caches).

Any expert recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Franklin
