What's your favorite Drum Sample CD?

What's your favorite Drum Sample CD?

2003-11-30 by Mark

Hi there!

I wondering what everyone's favorite drums sample CDs are. It can be
accoustic, electronic, anything..

The reason I'm asking is that I purchased an "Electronic Retro Drum
Machine" CD on ebay for $25 and it features many old electronic kits
from Roland, Akai, Casio, and so only but my only complaint is that
the audio levels are really low! I mean REALLY low! It was cheap
and in native EXS24 format so it was worth a try. I also picked up
the Wizoo Platinum24 Electronic Drums and the Platinum24 Latin
Percussion (both converted from Akai format to EXS24 using the EXS24
importer). They aren't bad, but again, for whatever reason it seems
like the volume is just a tad bit low. My Xtreme Analog and Xtreme
Digital CDs have so much more presence than these other CDs.

Sometimes there is truth to "Ya get what ya pay for!" and that is why
I'm asking. Maybe there are some other EXS24 sample CDs out there I
should look into. I'm just not aware of what's good or bad but I
certainly don't want to waste any more money.

Thanks! :)

MARK: I USE WIZOO PLAT. ACOUSTIC; ITS GOOD BUT NOT GREAT. TRY NATURALSTUDIO
KIT FREE FROM SITE. YELLOWTOOLS STUFF IS GOOD. YOU WILL HAVE TO COMPRESS
YOUR KIT MIX AND/OR INDIVIDUAL TRACKS FOR AN IN YA FACE SOUND. GOOD
MONITORING IS A MUST. REVERB
IS A FACTOR. DRUMS ARE LARGELY ACOUSTIC AND NEED SPACE, EVEN THE KIK. CHEERS
JOHN.

I like the Wizoo Mixtended Drums and Peter Erskine's Living Drums, but if I
had to pick just one out of the libraries I have, Drumkit From Hell would
be it.

I have recently purchased Drumkit From Hell, excellent sounds but the
levels are very low. Can someone help me out with the process to
increase the velocity settings on all the samples.

Many thanks, Paul.

Hmm, can't say I noticed any level problems with my copy of DKFH.

Did you use the supplied EXS instruments, or use something else to convert
from another format?

The EXS24 also has an output level slider - you can raise that to turn up
the default level of the EXS24, or you could insert a gainer plugin on the
EXS24 audio instrument channel.

If you converted the CD from another format(ie AKAI) it is possible you
used a very low default setting. I believe they are -6 -3 0 +3 +6, for
drums you should always go with 0. Just check that.

I am going to try this for my Wizoo Electronic Drum Machines CD. I
didn't even think about changing the volume level, although it's an
obvious thing I should have done. Thanks for pointing it out.

As someone else mentioned, make sure your settings for converting aren't set
to lower the volume. Usually the default is something like -3 db or -6b. Put
it up to 0 before you convert. That should help.
