Hi All, Subject pretty much says it all. I have heard rumors that Emagic / Apple kind of bent the rules as far as the AU spec goes. Not really sure what that means other than it seems at the current state of things an AU plug/app is not really the universally compatible format that we had all hoped for. (yet?) I have heard that the EXSP AU will not work w/ DP. Any info to the contrary? Steve

Considering that EXSP came out _before_ the Apple buyout, I think you mean "Emagic". The Apple Core Audio developers are putting together an AU validation tool, so it will be interesting to see how well both the EXSP24 and EVP73 do in the test (rumour has it: not good :-( > Not really sure what that means other than it seems at the current state > of things an AU plug/app is not really the universally compatible format > that we had all hoped for. (yet?) Its still a growing format, and certainly for the early adopters (Emagic included) there were/are misinterpretations of how an AU should behave. Over time these will be resolved, especially as more and better documentation becomes available. As for the future, things are looking like being a hell of a lot of fun!!! > I have heard that the EXSP AU will not work w/ DP. Any info to the > contrary? I've tried both EVP73 and EXSP24 in SynthTest without success--GUI appears, but no audio output. I gather this is common. Agreed; it'll be great when it all works. But as far as "early adopters" I am not one. It seems that OSX and AU have been around for quite some time now, and there are still a lot of problems. It seems particularly bad to me that even the AU plugs of Emagic (who are now in Apple's pocket) do not work with other programs that are "AU compatible" Don't mean to vent here, but I was realy hoping to settle in w/ the EXS family so I can use the same libraries (without wasting time and disk-space) in both Logic and DP. Hi, Steve Morrell wrote: > It seems that OSX and AU have been around for quite some time now, In OS terms, not really. OS 10.1 was an early start, with very basic AU support. A lot of things changed when 10.2 came out, with a much improved AU programming interface. And a whole lot of new things are coming out in 10.3, as well as bug fixes and other enhancements which will be folded back into the 10.2.x streams for those who wish to stay with Jaguar. Fortunately, all of this is open and documented, unlike the bad old days of VST. > and there are still a lot of problems. True, but then we are using computers ;-) > It seems particularly bad to me that even the AU plugs of Emagic The Emagic AU developers are on the core-audio list, so they do know that Logic and their AU plugins have problems, and they _are_ fixing them. > (who are now in Apple's pocket) *sigh* What has this to do with this matter?? > do not work with other programs that are "AU compatible" <humour> I thought people wanted their AUs to behave like VSTs, including incompatabilities too! </humour> > Don't mean to vent here, but I was realy hoping to settle in w/ the EXS > family so I can use the same libraries (without wasting time and > disk-space) in both Logic and DP. Well, I am sure that soon we will see the EXSP24 AU fixed up when the validation tool from Apple becomes available to developers. Other AU host developers will be checking the Emagic AUs as they will want to host them, Apple will very likely check various vendors' AUs to see if they meet the AU API specs, consumers will be able to check whether the fault is with an AU or not, and so on. Note: there was never such a tool as this for VST as far as I am aware. I suspect that these first versions (important point) are simply quick ports of the old VST code over to the AU playform. There have been several problems with the Emagic VST2AU library discussed on the core-audio list, so I imagine that they only tested these AUs with Logic, they worked, so they shipped them 'cos everyone was screaming for them. When I get my Mac back on line I will be checking the EXSP24 against the validation tool, and will be letting Emagic know the results (although I have a feeling that I won't be alone in this venture!!)
