[GEN] Logic Audio EXSP?

[GEN] Logic Audio EXSP?

2003-11-16 by methinked@earthlink.net

I have an acquaintance who has fiddled around with a MIDI keyboard with
built in sounds, "tracks" etc. and now she would like to step up a bit
to a DAW. I would like to suggest the Logic Audio Big Box to her which,
if I recall correctly, includes the EXSP24 software.

One question though...

Is the essential difference between the EXSP and the full on EXS that
you can create and map your own sample sets with the latter, whereas the
former is simply a sample player? More specifically, if she uses the
EXSP24, she can compose/play multiple tracks of MIDI and route the
signal to be recorded as audio if she likes, correct?

Many thanks

Jesse,

Yes, the essential differences are as you state. The exs24 also has a lot
more features for manipulating sound, especially with the mark II, but I
don't know exactly what they are, as I am an EXSP user.

As a "Rompler" user who never tweaked any of the preset sounds, I figured
the EXSP would just replace my Ensoniq KS-32 as a sound source. For me, the
EXS would have just been overkill, since I don't use even the sound tweaking
capabilities of the EXSP very much. But I do run 8-12 instances of the exsp
in all my songs, with different instruments loaded into each, so it replaces
my KS-32 well in that regard.

The only bad thing I have to say about it is that the included sounds (both
CDs) are limited and haven't been very useful for me. I hate the pianos and
the strings, but have downloaded free instruments off the web that I like
better. To replace all the functionality in terms of sound selection that
I had with my KS-32, I am having to buy 3rd party CDs with the instruments I
need.

You probably are already an EXS user so know all that. I just wanted to
point out that I think the Big Box will be great for your friend, but
probably not complete in terms of access to different sounds.

Actually I am not yet an EXS user, so it was very informative. I do
intend to get the EXS...probably EXSP...soon though. Panther and Logic
for OSX are ahead of the EXS though (still running Logic 4.x).
