[LAM] Control change number 11 -> expression

[LAM] Control change number 11 -> expression

2003-11-22 by Cyril Blanc

Hello

I got some classical midi files using the control 11 : expression.
If I use the EXS24, will it understand this controller or do I have to
convert to another one ?

How could you explain this controller : "Expression" ?

Thanks in advance.

Bonjour Cyril,

It's like a 2nd volume control, useful for doing volume fluctuations
within a track, e.g. to fade a sustaining note, to do crescendos and
diminuendos, to do a slow attack on one particular note, etc. etc.

This leaves CC07 free to be a master volume for that track. Without CC11
all those fades, slow attacks, crescendos and diminuendos would have to
be done using CC07 and, therefore, would need to be edited every time
you wanted to make the whole track softer or louder. (Been there, done
that many years ago - trust me, it's not pleasant!)

HTH :-)

Hello Bill
Thanks for your answer.
So what should I do with them if the midi track is sent to an EXS instrument
; does the EXS understands "expression"
Do I have to convert it to a CC 07 ?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry Cyril, I can't help you with that one. I haven't used my EXS24 yet
because I can hardly get it to work on my system, certainly not well
enough to bother playing with it. :-(

The EXS "understands" any controller you want. Just assign whatever
controller to whichever function in the EXS's modulation matrix. In
this case, assign CC11 to volume, and you're set.

Yes thanks, Cyril, I'd *love* some help. :o)

But I don't want to waste the group's time with vague, useless
questions. One day (or week!) I'll find the time and determination to
figure out *exactly* what problems are happening, with different
settings, etc., and then I'll be back asking for specific help.

Cheers, Bill

Hello Hendrik,

I got a message from Evan Evan saying :

How could I check this, I never played with the parameters of the EXS !

Thanks in advance.

Just send the EXS some CC11 messages (plus some notes of course :-)
and see what happens -- that seems to be the easiets way to check if
it works. If nothing happens, go to the modulation matrix, pick an
empty slot, set 'volume' for destination (Dst), pick CC11 for source
(Src), and see how that works.
