Beige G3/233/AW8 & EXS24

Beige G3/233/AW8 & EXS24

2001-04-23 by Tony Thompson

Hello Logical samplists everywhere...

I have the above setup with the exception of the EXS24. I have 320 meg RAM
and could up that to 384. Anybody using beige G3s with the EXS24? What's the
latency like? I don't particularly want to upgrade my system until I know
more what work (and money) is coming in, particularly as I have been working
as a programmer on other people's LAMP systems. My setup works fine for me
now and I'm reluctant to mess about with it until the dust settles around
Mac OS X. Furthermore, I don't want to get into buying a new G4 and having
to expensively update a lot of peripherals when I also want new monitors and
a bunch of new microphones! If I can run EXS then I can not only use it
for my own material but also possibly do a certain amount of preparation
work for my next album gig.

If you do have a beige G3 and want to upgrade the memory then you should
visit http://www.memoryx.net, especially if you are in the UK. I managed to
get 256 meg from them, with import duties and delivery charges from
California, for less than the cost of 128 meg from the UK dealer I tried
(Mad Macs) who also mislaid two successive consignments en route but still
took the money from my credit card and hung onto it to the bitter end!

Good news mate
I have the same setup with exception of the card. I have an Event Gina.
With the AW8 there will be almost no latency. There is no reason to upgrade
at this stage. I am writing extensively using ES1, EXS24, and EVP88 using
some audio and lots of FX. I can write trax to full completion with a little
care and a little bouncing down. You can clock your G3 up to 300 mhz very
easily. They basically restricted them at the begininning and all 233/266's
are really 300's.
If you want to talk about that contact me and I'll let you know how. It's
very easy and very worthwhile.
So get on with your work and don't think about upgrasding till you get that
advance you have been waiting for.
Good luck
Lee

New Logic Instruments

Wow, I just hooked up the the New York Emagic rep this weekend and heard the
EVP88. During the demo, the EXS was running a drum loop while someone played
the 88. I couldn't believe it! It sounded like a sooooo-FAT analog real
Rhodes and Whurlitzer (sp?) in the room. I could hear a sharp contrast
between the loop and the 88. It was stunning. There was a guy at the store
who was there to purchase Rhodes-emulating hardware, and he is now scrapping
that plan purchase an may even switch from Cubase to Logic just to use the
EVP88. This is an incredible plug-in and another reason I'm glad to be a
Logic-user. I also noticed that Emagic is going to release a 20-band vocoder
guaranteed to definitely work with Logic. It even has an internal carrier
that is midi-note programmable! No more single pitch built-in carriers or
crappy performance from routing an external source. I think the EVOC20 (as
Emagic calls it) can do that too, while maintaining performance stability. I
can hardly wait.

Well, I have to disagree on that one. I also have a beige G3 and had
a AW8 'laying around' (I use a Lexicon Core/2). I decided to install
the AW8, yet latency was worse than the Lexicon

They basically restricted them at the begininning and all 233/266's

I'm interested in that one too !
