EXSP24 Multi-channnel drums not working

EXSP24 Multi-channnel drums not working

2004-03-07 by geetar67

Greetings everyone,

I know this has been covered before - I've searched for and read past
posts on how to set up multi-channel instruments, and I believe I've
followed the directions correctly, but it still doesn't work.

Despite having: (1) set up a mutli-channel drums instrument (e.g.,
kicks group set to EXSP main output, snares to output 3-4, toms
to 5-6, etc.); (2) chosen Multi Channel EXSP24 in the Instrument
object; and (3) set up the Aux objects to receive input from
the various EXSP outputs, it seems that regardless of the output
channel settings in the instrument, ALL the samples are output only
through the channel pair selected in the Options menu of the
multi-channel EXSP24 instance. From that menu I can select
outputs 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, or 7-8, and the selected pair are the channels
that output all the drums, ignoring the instrument's group settings.

I'd really like to get multi-channel drums happening soon, any advice
is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That's the way to set it up, but it could be that EXS24p has some
problems or that the song file you're using has become corrupted - or
Logic prefs, etc. You might also try setting it up again within the
same session, because Logic often needs a kick in the ass to open up
audio channels that for whatever reason have become closed.

Another thing that could work - although it shouldn't - is to try
setting all the Zones in each Group to the output you want, not just
the Group output.

Be aware that even if you get the instruments to come out individual
outs, the mixer's channel fader will affect the entire
AudioInstrument. You can still use the Aux or Output faders to adjust
levels, but cc11 seems much easier.

NIck, thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out. I'm actually trying to set it up in
Autoload, not an existing song. I did previously try setting the zones' output in
addition to the groups, but it didn't solve the problem.

Just to be clear about your last comment - you mean that the fader for the
AudioInstrument object's channel will affect the levels of the other outs, akin to a
post-fader bus send? Or something else? Also, I've never used cc11, how would you
use it in this case?

Thanks again,
Arch

Yes, if you have 8 AI channels (for 8 outs) in your Audio layer, all
eight will move together if you move one of them.

Just like the mod wheel or any other controller. If your keyboard has
a slider that sends a different MIDI cc, you can Transform it in the
Environment if necessary. EXS comes pre-wired to respond to cc11.
