Cut off samples

2004-03-14 by natural_one87

Howdy. I just came across this group and was wondering if y'all
could help me solve this dilemma. I have a problem with drum loops
and individual drum hits getting cut off and not playing all the way
through. I have Logic Audio 4.7 on a Dual 500 G4 Mac. This usually
happens when I start building up a song, but has also happened with
as few as 2 midi tracks,( assigned to a single or 2 audio
instruments), triggering the EXS. The last time it happened was when
I laid down a simple bass line on a mono audio track over a simple 1
bar loop in the EXS.
I've tried lenthening the note in the Event List editor, changing
the length in the instrument parameter window, and messed around
some with release time in the EXS instrument editor all to no avail.
Any one know what I might try next? Thanks.

Hm...
Can it be that this happens with two notes of equal pitch?
If yes then turn off interpretation and overlap (or how this names are)
in your score window to see the notes length. Play just the problem
part and try to decrease (!) the length of the note which makes only
"klick" instead of sounding. If it goes right into the next note it
gets triggered but cannot sound. Happens sometimes after humanizing.

If you have a single note line and the above is your problem you might
just select all and force them to "legato" in the menu - this fixes all
overlapping notes.

Peter,
Thanks for your suggestions. It is indeed 2 notes of equal pitch.
The duration is 1 bar, which I messed around with, trying a little
less and a little more than a whole note to see if that had any
effect. No dice. I must reiterate that this problem occurs sometimes
with a simple 1 bar drum loop(in the EXS24, not in an audio track)
set to play on 1 of every bar and triggered by a simple whole note.
It doesn't matter whether I copy the 1 bar object or loop it,it
plays for about 2 bars and then from the third bar on, it plays only
about halfway(2 beats, rather than 4).In the track parameter window
I have tried selecting Legato, 200%, etc. as well as lesser values,
even "fix" To no avail. I have quantized the note using Whole, half,
quarter, etc. Nothing. Should I go to the EXS and select "One shot"
to force the sample to play all the way through every time?

This is the most basic of functions one asks of his or her
sequencer in dance music, hip hop, jungle, etc. I love Logic and have
used it for years on and off, but want to resolve this issue ASAP.
There must be some gap in my knowledge here. Has this been a problem
for anyone else?

If everything fails, dit you try it in another, fresh song?
The point I'm making is this: some bizarre problems are sometimes
occuring in one song file only. At least here.
I have a particular song that I'm working on which is somewhat corrupt.
I can't hear notes C1, D1 and E3 in EXS when played on the keyboard via
midi-in. The rest of the notes get through. Very strange. Apart from
that the song plays fine.

If it is the same note (same pitch), it is as Peter said, the EXS
will cut the note (both the first and the new) if the length of the
first note extends into the second, or ends simultaneously as the new
starts.

i.e. you have to END the first note before triggering the same note
again:
C-1, start 1 1 1 1, end 1 3 3 3
C-1, start 2 1 1 1, end 2 3 3 3

you don't have to shorten it this much, but try it first and see if
that helps. if it does, use event edit or matrix edit and shorten it
just a bit down from a whole note, a couple of ticks usually is
enough.

there is a menu/key command to fix this, i don't rememeber the
name. "shorten note lengths to avoid overlapping" or someting. please
note that if you have a looped object with only one (whole) note, and
use this command it won't help (the function does not see the next
note because the looped object only see one note)

I guess thats your problem, but it could be something else.

Kiotozane,
Thanks for the advice about cut off loops. I'll try the second
suggestion(shorten overlapping notes), since the 1st one didn't do
it. Also I'll try starting a new song and using the same loop and
see if that song file was maybe corrupted. Is there anyone else out
there who has experienced this problem? If I recall correctly, I
experienced it before the existence of the EXS24 when I used to
sequence using Logic and an Akai S3200xl sampler. It must be a Logic
thing. BTW, my setup is Logic 4.7, Mac OS9, if that helps. Thanks to
the group for trying to help me solve this.
