Have a look at the audio object using "Track 1" - it needs to be there (but
Logic should actually tell you so).
Another reason might be that your master fader is all the way down.
I can't imagine anything else.

The weird thing when auditioning samples is that, apart from the master
volume fader, you don't have any other volume control (others than in Sample
Edit which is using the volume of the audio object it's playing through).

Thank you for your help Sascha - Indeed Track 1 must have an output 
channel selected.  It's auditioning fine now.
