30-minute load times....ARGHH!

2004-05-15 by richarddamonallen

I'm using Logic Audio 6.3.1 with EXSP24. I have a huge set of sounds (several thousand
instruments) on a Lacie Firewire drive. All of the .exs instrument files were installed within
the folder that also held the samples for each instrument. That setup worked fine on a
Logic Platinum system. All that was needed was an alias in the Logic 6 Series folder
pointing to the folder on the Lacie. It doesn't work that way with this system. When I
don't have the Lacie plugged in, the autoload takes about 30-45 seconds to load up.
When I plug it in, it takes literally over 30 minutes to load up. I have tried duplicating the
directory structure, removing the audio files (leaving only the .exs files), moving those into
my Logic 6 Series folder or Shared folder. Both cause greater-than-30 minute load times.
What's going on?? I know this shouldn't be a problem...

Does your Autoload have the Project Manager open in one of the
screensets? The PM is a *dog* and can take ages to finish doing its
thing. The answer is to create a new autoload without it.

EXSmanager is also very useful in reducing load times.....

Colin-

I'm using Logic Audio 6.3.1. Only the Platinum or Pro versions have the PM. I don't. I did
buy the EXS Manager and am working on it right now. But I can't figure out where to put
my Sampler instrument files. Logic (EXSP24) won't recognize them in the Logic 6 Series
folder or in the Shared folder (not the shared folder in my home directory, the actual
Shared folder just under Users, which is where my EXSPFactorySoundset is located).

Anyone know where it should go???? Library/Application Support/Emagic/ perhaps???

Samples can be anywhere. Logic searches for them. that's what takes so darn long when
you first open an instrument to play it. Logic is searching all the necessary paths for the
samples. What takes so long at startup could be related to your "missing samples"
problem.

I think there is a pref in EXS options, that you can change if sample searching should be on
External, Local, or Both or something like that. You might try di**ing with that and seeing
what happens.

Also if you have any instruments with samples in your autoload that might be what's
taking so long. Especially with third party plug-ins like Kontakt, AU-VST conversions, and
the old EXSP24 (the worst and slowest loader of all softsynths).

EXSManager from Redmatica.com solves this problem easily. It goes out and
relinks your EXS instruments to the correct samples and ends the searching
everytime they load. Cuts down load time dramatically. It is also
extremely fast at the relink process, usually only seconds, unlike Project
Manager.
