[OT] Extract audio

[OT] Extract audio

2004-07-19 by sam sutton

Not quite EXS related but..do u happen to know a good way to extract audio
or WAVs off of CD to import in to Logic as Audio. I used to do it in OS 9 on
'Toast' 'extract' but this is not a feature of OS X. Any ideas?

Hi Sam,

I wondered the same thing when I first switched to OS X. I quickly
realized that the functionality is built into the CD driver now. So
just double click the CD icon and drag the tracks to your desktop or
hard drive; and they will be extracted there.

One thing though; check the permissions on the newly created files
after you do this. I'm not sure how the permissions are "governed" with
this new functionality. I have found that sometimes I need to set them
myself and sometimes I don't. And I haven't quite figured out the cause
and effect that determines which specific circumstances warrant going
in and setting them manually. Maybe it's got to do with which drive I
extract them to; I'm not certain.

And if you extract a bunch into a specific folder; you can of course
change the permissions for all the files at once by selecting the
folder icon and doing it from there, and clicking the option that
applies the permissions to all of the folder's contents.

Why not use iTunes? This way you get the track names as well.

Yeah, that'll work too. It's just that it seems like more work; setting
the file format prefs in itunes, then rooting around in your folders to
get to the nested folder containing the files, then placing them where
you actually want them, and deleting the redundant newly created
artist/albumn folders, etc. I guess it depends on what you are
extracting; ie: if it is a commercial CD with that information
available or not.
