Logic 6 & 7 performance issues

I am very encouraged to hear about some people not having problems with Logic 7 - even on systems less powerful than mine. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them, ;-( I've got a song that plays without any problems in 6.4.2 OS9 - 16 audio tracks, some of them stereo, using Waves, UAD-1, & Logic plugins, no Audio Instruments. In Logic 6 it chokes when it gets to a section with 8 mono background vocal tracks - can't process the data fast enough. The same problem in Logic 7 - with the Waves plugins disabled via the AU Validator. I tried changing the buffer, etc, but nothing seems to fix it. I know others with similar or less powerful systems are having no problems, but I don't know what else to do. Very frustrating. I've read a number of posts with suggestions and I've tried them, but still no go. I'm open for more ideas. Ron... 1 GHz G4, 1 GB RAM, 7200 rpm 120 GB HD for audio only, OSX 10.3.5, RME Multiface
